WEB designer Melissa Norfolk started her career as a job on the side nine years ago.
"My mum started her own business and wanted a web site, so I built her one on my weekends," the Balwyn North businesswoman said.
"Then she told a friend, and then she told a friend ... and it just started from there." By word of mouth, Ms Norfolk built her business, and recently won an Australian Achiever Award for customer service.
"There are a lot of (people) my mum's age in business who aren't very computer literate," Ms Norfolk said. "A typical male IT person, they type and talk fast, they don't really explain things.
"So that's what has helped us, that we explain things in plain English and don't treat people like they're stupid if they don't understand. "
Ms Norfolk's team also specialise in designing search engine-friendly web sites. "It is just common sense, that your web site has to say, in text, what you do, in more than one place," she said.
"Web sites with a picture, animation or an 'enter' button on the front page don't do as well as sites that have some text on them."
